What is a Canadian Work Permit?

A Canadian Work Permit is an official authorization issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows foreign nationals to legally work in Canada. Most individuals require a work permit to accept employment, though certain occupations may be exempt.

There are two main types of Canadian work permits:

  • Employer-Specific Work Permit
  • Open Work Permit

Employer-Specific Work Permit

This permit allows you to work only for the employer listed on your work permit, for a specific role, location, and duration.

Requirements for an Employer-Specific Work Permit:

  • A valid job offer from an eligible Canadian employer
  • An approved Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from the employer
  • Meeting the following eligibility criteria:
    • No criminal record
    • Good health condition
    • Not a threat to national security
    • Commitment to leave Canada after the work permit expires

Open Work Permit

An Open Work Permit allows you to work for almost any eligible employer in Canada. It is not tied to one specific job or employer. You may qualify if you have applied for Permanent Residency under one of the following programs:

  • Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
  • Family Class Sponsorship
  • Humanitarian & Compassionate Ground
